A square metre is a unit of surface measurement equal to the area of a square with sides of one metre. Its symbol is m². It is the universal unit used to express surface areas against a common standard.

A square metre is a unit of surface measurement equal to the area of a square with sides of one metre. Its symbol is m². It is the universal unit used to express surface areas against a common standard.
The area of a rectangular surface is found by multiplying its width by its length. A room with a long side of 5 metres and a short side of 2 metres therefore has an area of 5 × 2 = 10 square metres.
Net area is the usable area measured between the internal faces of the walls. Gross area also takes in the thickness of those walls. The dimensions you enter in this tool are read as net area; once you enter a wall thickness, the gross area is calculated automatically.
One dönüm corresponds to 1,000 m² and is equivalent to the decare in the metric system. To find the figure in dönüm, divide the area in square metres by 1,000.
The wall surface is the perimeter of the room multiplied by the floor-to-ceiling height. Door and window openings are deducted from that figure; in this tool the deduction is entered as a percentage and defaults to 15%.
