Assumptions behind the calculation
- The tile count is derived from the area including waste and rounded up.
- Adhesive is assumed at 3.5–6.5 kg/m² depending on the trowel notch.
- Grout is derived from tile size, thickness and joint width: smaller tiles need far more grout.
- On an uneven substrate, adhesive consumption rises above these figures.
Three things to know before buying tiles
Buying too few means never finding the same batch again — that is the usual cause of shade differences.
Waste depends on the pattern
Straight laying needs 7%; staggered needs 10%; diagonal and herringbone, where cutting is heavy, need 15%. In small, angular rooms such as bathrooms take the upper figure.
The batch number must match
Tiles carry a shade variation by kiln batch. A box bought later, even of the same product, can look visibly different. That is why rounding up and buying in one go is correct.
Do not forget adhesive and grout
Budgets are usually built on the tile alone, yet adhesive, grout and trim profiles add up. Large-format tiles need a deeper notch and more adhesive.

How much waste allowance do tiles need?
It depends on the laying pattern. Straight laying needs 7%, staggered 10%, and diagonal or herringbone patterns 15% because of the heavy cutting. In small angular rooms — bathrooms, WCs, corridors — almost every tile gets cut, so take the upper figure. In a large rectangular living room the lower figure is enough.
How many boxes of tiles should I buy?
Divide the area including waste by the square metres per box and round up. Coverage per box is printed on the product and depends on tile size — around 1.44 m² for 60×60 tiles and 1.08 m² for 30×60. Rounding up is unavoidable because tiles are not sold by the piece from an opened box.
How much adhesive and grout will I need?
Adhesive depends on the trowel notch: roughly 3.5 kg/m² at 6 mm, 5 kg/m² at 8 mm and 6.5 kg/m² at 10 mm. Large-format tiles need a deeper notch. Grout is highly sensitive to tile size: a 60×60 tile with a 3 mm joint needs only 0.15–0.20 kg/m², while a 10×10 mosaic at the same joint width needs several times that. The smaller the tile, the greater the total joint length per square metre.
Is waste added to the adhesive calculation?
No. Waste is the tile that gets cut off and thrown away, and no adhesive goes underneath it. So the tile quantity is calculated with waste while adhesive and grout are calculated on the real area. This tool makes that distinction automatically. The exception is a badly uneven substrate, where adhesive also acts as a levelling layer and consumption rises.
Can the same tile be used on walls and floors?
Technically no. Floor tiles are rated for abrasion and slip resistance; wall tiles are thinner and lighter and will crack underfoot. For visual continuity, use the floor and wall versions of the same range. Calculating wall and floor areas separately is necessary anyway, since the two products have different coverage per box.
This tool gives an initial estimate and does not replace a site survey. Substrate flatness, pattern direction, room geometry and the tiler's technique all change real consumption.
